In which city is the Wimbledon Championships held?

The story behind the answer

The Wimbledon Championships are held in London, England.

More precisely, Wimbledon is a district in southwest London, and the tournament takes place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Church Road. The event is commonly shortened to “Wimbledon,” although its formal name is The Championships, Wimbledon.

First held in 1877, Wimbledon is the oldest of tennis’s four Grand Slam tournaments. The inaugural competition featured only the Gentlemen’s Singles event, with 22 men entering. The venue moved from Worple Road to its present Church Road location in 1922 as the tournament expanded.

Wimbledon is also the only Grand Slam still played on outdoor grass courts. Grass tends to produce faster play and lower, less predictable bounces than clay, while the tournament’s traditional white clothing rule and royal connections add to its distinctive identity. The nearby city names in the options are all English, but Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester do not host Wimbledon.
