In which city is the Sistine Chapel located?

The story behind the answer

The Sistine Chapel is located in Vatican City.

Vatican City is an independent city-state enclosed within Rome, Italy. The chapel stands in the Apostolic Palace, the pope’s official residence, and forms part of the Vatican Museums complex. Although visitors commonly describe it as being “in Rome,” the chapel’s political and geographic location is Vatican City.

The building takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who commissioned its construction in the late 15th century. It was built between 1473 and 1481 and consecrated on 15 August 1483. Michelangelo later painted its famous ceiling for Pope Julius II, completing the work between 1508 and 1512.

Rome is therefore a common mix-up: it is the surrounding Italian city, not the city-state in which the chapel is situated. Vatican City became an independent state in 1929 through the Lateran Treaty, long after the chapel itself had been built.
