Which scene on the ceiling shows God creating the sun and the moon?

The story behind the answer

Which scene on the ceiling shows God creating the sun and the moon? The Creation of the Sun and Moon shows that act.

Michelangelo’s central Genesis panel is more fully titled The Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Plants. It combines events from the third and fourth days of creation: God brings forth vegetation and establishes the sun and moon to govern day, night, time, and seasons. The shorter title “The Creation of the Sun and Moon” is a recognized name for the same fresco.

The composition presents God twice. On one side, he turns toward the plant world; on the other, he surges forward while pointing toward the sun and the faint moon. This doubled depiction compresses separate moments from Genesis into one dynamic image rather than showing a single instant.

It is the second scene in the ceiling’s chronological sequence, following The Separation of Light from Darkness. It is often confused with that neighboring panel, but the distinction is simple: the first depicts light and darkness, while this one introduces the heavenly bodies and vegetation.
