In which city is the headquarters of the United Nations located?

The story behind the answer

The headquarters of the United Nations is in New York City.

The complex stands on the east side of Manhattan beside the East River. The site opened in 1952 after the United Nations selected New York as its permanent headquarters. The land was assembled with help from John D. Rockefeller Jr., who donated funds for the purchase.

The headquarters includes the General Assembly Building, the Secretariat Building, the Conference Building, and the Dag Hammarskjöld Library. Although the complex is in the United States, it is treated as international territory for certain legal and diplomatic purposes under an agreement with the host country.

The United Nations also has major offices in Geneva, Vienna, and Nairobi. Those locations host important agencies and meetings, but they are not the organization’s principal headquarters. The General Assembly meets in New York, while the Security Council and other UN bodies conduct much of their work there as well.
