In which city is the Art Nouveau building Casa Batlló located?
Answer
Barcelona
Answer
Barcelona
The Art Nouveau building Casa Batlló is located in Barcelona, Spain.
Casa Batlló stands on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona’s Eixample district, one of the city’s most celebrated areas of modernist architecture. Antoni Gaudí redesigned an existing house for the industrialist Josep Batlló i Casanovas between 1904 and 1906. The project transformed the façade, main floor, patio, and roof rather than creating an entirely new building from an empty site.
Its undulating stone façade, bone-like columns, mask-shaped balconies, and colorful trencadís mosaic give the building an organic, almost otherworldly appearance. The roof is commonly interpreted as a dragon’s back, while the interior uses a carefully designed light well and catenary arches to distribute daylight and air.
In Catalan it is often called Casa dels Ossos, or “House of Bones,” because of its skeletal forms. Casa Batlló belongs to Barcelona’s Modernisme, the Catalan expression of Art Nouveau, and forms part of the Illa de la Discòrdia, a block containing several striking works by different architects. It became part of the UNESCO-listed Works of Antoni Gaudí in 2005.
