In which city is Real Madrid's home stadium located?

The story behind the answer

Real Madrid’s home stadium is located in Madrid, Spain. The Bernabéu stands in the city’s Chamartín district along the Paseo de la Castellana, one of Madrid’s major north–south avenues.

The stadium opened on 14 December 1947 as Real Madrid’s new home and was renamed the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in 1955 to honor Santiago Bernabéu, the club president who oversaw its development. It has since become one of football’s most recognizable venues.

The stadium has hosted major international occasions, including matches at the 1964 European Nations’ Cup and the 1982 FIFA World Cup. The 1982 World Cup final, won by Italy against West Germany, was played there.

Madrid is sometimes confused with nearby Spanish cities in quiz questions because Real Madrid’s biggest domestic rivals come from elsewhere: Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville all have prominent La Liga clubs. The stadium is firmly in Madrid, however, and shares the city with Atlético Madrid’s home ground.
