Independence Hall is in Philadelphia, where the Declaration commemorated by America250 was adopted.
The building stands in Independence National Historical Park and was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress used its Assembly Room when it debated independence and approved the Declaration in 1776.
The same building later hosted the Constitutional Convention. Delegates met there in 1787 and drafted the United States Constitution, making Independence Hall central to both the Declaration and the nation’s constitutional history.
Independence Hall was originally known as the Pennsylvania State House. The name “Independence Hall” became associated with the building because of its role in the independence movement. It should not be confused with nearby Congress Hall or the Liberty Bell Center, which are separate historic sites.
