In which city is Gregor Mendel buried?

The story behind the answer

Gregor Mendel is buried in Brno, at Brno Central Cemetery in the Czech Republic.

Mendel spent most of his scientific and religious career in Brno, then known as Brünn. He lived and worked at St. Thomas’s Abbey, where he conducted his famous pea-plant experiments and later served as abbot. He died there on January 6, 1884, from chronic nephritis, a serious kidney disease.

His funeral took place in Brno, and his remains were interred in the Augustinian tomb at the city’s Central Cemetery. The cemetery, opened in the 1880s, contains the graves of many notable figures from the region, including scientists, artists, and public officials.

Mendel’s burial place reflects how closely Brno was tied to his life and work. Although he studied at the University of Vienna and spent time in Olomouc, neither city is his burial place. Prague and Vienna are also common guesses because of their historical importance in the Austrian Empire.
