In which city did the Second Continental Congress proclaim the Declaration of Independence in 1776?

The story behind the answer

The Second Continental Congress proclaimed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776.

Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall. Philadelphia was a major political, commercial, and printing center in the colonies, making it a natural meeting place for representatives confronting the crisis with Britain.

The delegates voted for independence on July 2, 1776, and approved the Declaration’s wording on July 4. The document explained the reasons for separation and listed grievances against King George III. Philadelphia therefore has a central place in the history commemorated by America250.

Washington, D.C., was not the setting: it became the national capital only later, after the federal government moved there in 1800. New York City hosted important Revolutionary-era events, including George Washington’s 1789 inauguration, while Boston was a major early center of resistance and conflict. None of those cities was the location where Congress adopted the Declaration.
