In which city did the Second Continental Congress adopt the Declaration of Independence for America250’s historic anniversary?

The story behind the answer

The Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia.

Congress met in the Pennsylvania State House, the building now known as Independence Hall. Delegates debated independence and revised the document there during June and July 1776. Philadelphia was a major port and political center in the thirteen colonies, making it a practical location for the continental government during the Revolution.

Independence Hall is part of Independence National Historical Park and remains closely associated with the creation of the United States. The building also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, so it connects the Declaration with the later framing of the Constitution.

Boston is strongly associated with the American Revolution because of events such as the Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party, but Congress did not adopt the Declaration there. New York City became an important wartime and early national center, while Charleston was a major Southern port. Neither city was the site of the Declaration’s adoption. Philadelphia’s role explains why it is especially prominent in America250 commemorations.
