In which city did the 1787 Constitutional Convention meet?
Answer
Philadelphia
Answer
Philadelphia
The 1787 Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia.
Delegates gathered at the Pennsylvania State House, the building now known as Independence Hall. The convention ran from May 25 to September 17, 1787, and was initially authorized to revise the Articles of Confederation. Instead, the delegates developed an entirely new framework for the federal government.
George Washington was unanimously chosen to preside over the convention. James Madison’s proposals helped shape the discussions, while debates over representation produced the Connecticut Compromise, creating a House of Representatives based on population and a Senate with equal state representation.
Thirty-nine delegates signed the proposed Constitution on September 17. Rhode Island did not send delegates to the convention. Philadelphia later hosted the first federal government under the Constitution, but the national capital moved to Washington, D.C., in 1800.
