In which city did J.K. Rowling write much of Harry Potter?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling wrote much of Harry Potter in Edinburgh.

Rowling moved to Edinburgh in the early 1990s and continued working on the manuscript that became Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Cafés in the city, particularly those associated with her writing routine, became part of the popular story of the series’ creation. She also wrote at home while caring for her daughter, Jessica.

Edinburgh’s old streets, closes, graveyards, and dramatic architecture are frequently connected with the atmosphere of the books, although Hogwarts and the wizarding world are fictional rather than direct maps of the city. The city later became a major destination for Harry Potter fans and includes references to Rowling’s work in public places. London is also important to the fictional series, especially through locations such as King’s Cross Station, but Edinburgh is the city most closely associated with Rowling’s writing period.
