In which city did Jesus meet Zacchaeus, according to the Gospel of Luke?

The story behind the answer

Jesus met Zacchaeus in Jericho, according to the Gospel of Luke.

Luke 19 says that Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through when Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, tried to see him. Because Zacchaeus was short, he climbed a sycamore-fig tree along Jesus’ route. Jesus then called him down and announced that he would stay at Zacchaeus’ house.

The encounter presents Zacchaeus as wealthy but willing to respond dramatically to Jesus. He promised to give half his possessions to the poor and repay four times anyone he had cheated. Jesus concluded that salvation had come to the house and described his mission as seeking and saving the lost.

Jericho was an important ancient city in the Jordan Valley and stood on a major route leading toward Jerusalem. A common mix-up is placing this story in Bethany, another Gospel location associated with Jesus, or in Nazareth, where Jesus grew up. Luke specifically places Zacchaeus’ meeting with Jesus in Jericho.
