Georgia O'Keeffe established her namesake museum in Santa Fe. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened there in 1997, eleven years after the artist's death, and became the first museum in the United States dedicated to a woman artist of international stature.
The museum preserves and interprets O'Keeffe's art, archives, and life in relation to northern New Mexico. Its holdings include paintings, drawings, photographs, and documentary material. The institution also operates research and education programs connected with O'Keeffe's work and the region that became central to her identity.
Santa Fe is not the same place as Abiquiú or Ghost Ranch, two northern New Mexico locations closely associated with O'Keeffe's working life. She lived in Abiquiú for many years and painted extensively in the surrounding landscape, while Santa Fe became the location of the later museum. The museum's opening helped establish a permanent public home for her legacy.
