Georgia O'Keeffe died in Santa Fe in 1986.

She died on March 6, 1986, at the age of 98. Santa Fe was closely connected with the final phase of her life, although her artistic relationship with New Mexico had begun decades earlier through visits to the region in the 1920s.

O'Keeffe spent her later years in New Mexico and maintained a home at Abiquiú. She also had a residence at Ghost Ranch, north of Abiquiú, where the dramatic landscape supplied subjects for many paintings. Her ashes were scattered at the top of Pedernal, a mountain she repeatedly depicted.

Santa Fe is sometimes confused with Taos in accounts of O'Keeffe because both cities are important to New Mexico's art history. O'Keeffe's death, however, occurred in Santa Fe, and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum later opened there in 1997.
