Georgia O'Keeffe died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1986 at age 98. Her death in the region she had made central to her later life closed a career closely associated with the landscapes of the American Southwest.

O'Keeffe died on March 6, 1986. Although she was born in Wisconsin and spent important years in New York, New Mexico became her principal home and artistic subject after her first visits there in the 1920s. She moved to New Mexico permanently in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz's death.

Santa Fe is sometimes confused with Taos or Albuquerque because all three New Mexico places are linked with Southwestern art. O'Keeffe lived and worked in several locations, including Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch, but Santa Fe was the city where she died. Her ashes were scattered near Cerro Pedernal.
