In which city did C.S. Lewis teach at Magdalen College?
Answer
Oxford
Answer
Oxford
C.S. Lewis taught at Magdalen College in Oxford. He was elected a Fellow and tutor in English at Magdalen College, University of Oxford, in 1925 and remained there until 1954.
Magdalen College is one of Oxford’s historic colleges, founded in the fifteenth century. During his Oxford years, Lewis taught medieval and Renaissance literature, advised students, and participated in academic and literary discussion. His Oxford friendships included J.R.R. Tolkien and Charles Williams.
Lewis later became the first holder of the English Literature chair at Magdalene College, Cambridge, in 1954. The Cambridge college is spelled Magdalene, with an extra “e,” while the Oxford college where he taught earlier is Magdalen.
This distinction causes frequent confusion. Lewis’s major academic career began in Oxford, and his home near the city, the Kilns, became closely associated with his writing and the informal literary group known as the Inklings.
