In which Cheers season did Frasier Crane first appear?

The story behind the answer

Frasier Crane first appeared in season three of Cheers. Kelsey Grammer debuted as the psychiatrist in the two-part season-three premiere, “Rebound,” which aired in 1984.

The character was introduced as Diane Chambers’s new romantic and intellectual ideal after her breakup with Sam Malone. Frasier was initially intended to appear only briefly, helping create a temporary love triangle before Diane moved on. Grammer’s performance, however, impressed the producers so much that the role expanded into a recurring part.

Frasier’s early Cheers storyline included his engagement to Diane, the collapse of their planned wedding, and his gradual integration into the bar’s regular social circle. He later married Lilith Sternin, played by Bebe Neuwirth, and became the father of Frederick.

Viewers sometimes remember Frasier primarily as the Seattle radio psychiatrist from the 1993 spin-off, but his television story began in Boston. The Cheers introduction also explains why his character already had a complicated history with Diane and Sam when the spin-off began.
