In which California city was the first Banana Republic store opened?

The story behind the answer

The first Banana Republic store opened in Mill Valley, California. Mel and Patricia Ziegler founded the travel-inspired clothing business in 1978 after leaving their jobs at the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Zieglers initially sold unusual garments and military-surplus clothing gathered during their travels. One early success came from clothing Mel encountered while reporting in Australia, followed by a purchase of surplus Spanish Civil War paratrooper shirts. They sold the items at a flea market in Marin City before establishing a permanent store in nearby Mill Valley.

The brand’s original identity centered on the fantasy of exploration. Its catalogues combined drawings, photographs, and fictional travel narratives, while stores were designed with safari and expedition themes. That concept made Banana Republic distinctive long before it became a mainstream mall retailer.

A common mix-up is San Francisco, where the founders lived and worked, or Marin City, where they sold merchandise. Neither was the location of the first store. Mill Valley, in Marin County just north of San Francisco, was the correct California city.
