McDonald’s oldest surviving restaurant with Golden Arches stands in Downey, California.
The restaurant opened in 1953 at 10207 Lakewood Boulevard, making it the third McDonald’s location opened by Richard and Maurice McDonald. It retained the distinctive twin-arched building design associated with the early chain.
The Downey site is often described as the oldest surviving McDonald’s restaurant because earlier locations were demolished or substantially replaced. Its architecture preserves the visual style used before the brand became globally standardized.
Downey is sometimes confused with San Bernardino, where the McDonald brothers opened their original restaurant in 1940. San Bernardino is the birthplace of the business, but the surviving historic Golden Arches restaurant associated with the early chain is in Downey.
