The Declaration of Independence was adopted in Independence Hall, the building celebrated by America250.
Independence Hall stands in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was originally known as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress met there when it adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
The same building later hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, where delegates drafted the United States Constitution. That dual role makes Independence Hall one of the most important surviving sites associated with both American independence and the creation of the federal government.
The building was not originally called Independence Hall; that name became common later because of its association with the Declaration and the nation’s founding. It is part of Independence National Historical Park and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
