The Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence in Independence Hall, central to America250.
The building stood in Philadelphia and was then known as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress met there when it approved the Declaration on July 4, 1776. The building acquired the name Independence Hall in the nineteenth century, reflecting its association with the founding of the United States.
Independence Hall is often linked with both the Declaration and the U.S. Constitution. The Constitutional Convention also met there in 1787, making the building important to two foundational moments. That dual association is why it is one of the best-known historic sites in the United States.
The building is part of Independence National Historical Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. America250’s focus on the Declaration naturally places Philadelphia and Independence Hall among the most significant locations connected with the 2026 commemoration.
