In which African country is Tugela Falls, one of the world’s highest waterfalls?

The story behind the answer

Tugela Falls is in South Africa.

Tugela Falls descends from the Drakensberg escarpment in Royal Natal National Park in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is a series of five major free-leaping falls with a total claimed drop of about 948 metres. The waterfall begins near Mont-Aux-Sources, a prominent summit of the Drakensberg.

Tugela Falls has often been listed as the world’s second-highest waterfall after Angel Falls in Venezuela. Some later surveying has argued that Tugela may exceed Angel Falls, so rankings can vary depending on measurement methods and definitions. The unambiguous geographic fact is that the falls are in South Africa.

The waterfall is sometimes confused with the nearby Drakensberg amphitheatre, the enormous cliff formation from which the Tugela River descends. Tugela Falls is part of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
