In which act and scene is Romeo and Juliet’s balcony scene?

The story behind the answer

Romeo and Juliet’s balcony scene is in Act 2, Scene 2 of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Romeo enters the Capulet orchard after the feast and overhears Juliet speaking about her love for him.

The scene is often called the “balcony scene,” although Shakespeare’s text does not explicitly require Juliet to stand on a balcony. The stage direction says she appears “above” at a window or elevated part of the Capulet house. The balcony became the familiar visual image through later productions, paintings, films, and illustrations.

The scene contains Juliet’s reflection on names and identity, including the line “What’s in a name?” Romeo and Juliet then exchange promises and plan to marry with Friar Laurence’s assistance.

It follows the masked Capulet feast in Act 1, Scene 5 and comes before the secret marriage. Act 3, Scene 1 contains the street fight involving Mercutio and Tybalt, so it is a separate turning point.
