In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, what is the name of the city where Friar Laurence lives?

The story behind the answer

Friar Laurence lives in Verona in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Verona is the principal setting of the tragedy and the home of both the Montague and Capulet families. Friar Laurence’s cell is located there, and Romeo visits it for counsel, marriage, and later refuge after killing Tybalt.

The play also moves to Mantua after Romeo is banished from Verona. That change of location is important because Romeo learns about Juliet’s supposed death while away from the city. The failure of communication between Verona and Mantua helps produce the final catastrophe.

Readers sometimes answer Mantua because it is Romeo’s place of exile, but Friar Laurence remains associated with Verona. Shakespeare’s source traditions also place the lovers’ story in Italian cities, while the play’s dramatic geography concentrates most of the action in Verona and its immediate surroundings.
