In which 1902 book did Peter Pan first appear?

Peter Pan first appeared in J. M. Barrie’s 1902 book The Little White Bird. The character appears within this adult novel as a baby and young boy connected with Kensington Gardens in London.

Barrie later developed the character for the 1904 stage play Peter Pan; or, The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. In 1906, chapters about Peter were extracted and published separately as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, illustrated by Arthur Rackham.

Many readers first encounter Peter through the 1911 novel Peter and Wendy or through film adaptations, so those works are sometimes mistakenly identified as his first appearance. The earlier publication history shows that Peter Pan existed in print before the famous stage production and before the better-known Neverland adventures were presented in their familiar form.
