In what year was the Treaty of Versailles signed?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919.

The treaty was signed on 28 June 1919 in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles near Paris. It formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers after the First World War, although fighting had already stopped with the 11 November 1918 armistice.

The agreement required Germany to accept responsibility for losses and damage under Article 231, surrender territory, limit its armed forces, and pay reparations. It also created the League of Nations through its covenant.

The treaty entered into force on 10 January 1920. It is often confused with the armistice, which ended active fighting in 1918, or with the broader Paris Peace Conference that produced several postwar treaties.
