Which ancient wonder stood in Alexandria and was traditionally attributed to Sostratus of Cnidus?

The story behind the answer

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder traditionally attributed to Sostratus of Cnidus.

The lighthouse was built on Pharos, an island off Alexandria in Egypt, during the reigns of Ptolemy I Soter and Ptolemy II Philadelphus. It guided ships into the busy harbor and was probably completed in the early third century BC.

Ancient descriptions portray a monumental tower with multiple levels and a fire or reflective signal at its summit. Its design influenced the later use of the word “pharos” for lighthouses in several languages, including French and Italian.

Earthquakes damaged the structure over many centuries, and its remaining stones were reused in the medieval Fort Qaitbay. It is distinct from the Colossus of Rhodes, another ancient wonder, which was a giant statue rather than a navigational tower.
