In what year was the Swatch brand launched?
Answer
1983
Answer
1983
The Swatch brand was launched in 1983. Its first collection contained 12 watches and was introduced on 1 March 1983 in Zürich, Switzerland.
Swatch was developed in the early 1980s by engineers at ETA, led by Ernst Thomke with Elmar Mock and Jacques Müller. The design used a plastic case, a quartz movement, fewer components, and efficient manufacturing to make a Swiss-made watch affordable and visually distinctive.
The launch came as Swiss watchmakers struggled against inexpensive quartz watches from Japan and elsewhere. Swatch aimed to recover entry-level market share while also presenting a watch as a colorful fashion accessory rather than only a traditional timekeeping instrument.
The year 1983 is sometimes confused with later corporate milestones. ASUAG and SSIH were combined that year, while Nicolas Hayek took control of the consolidated business in 1985; the Swatch brand itself debuted in 1983.
