In what year was the Solomon Islands national flag adopted?

The story behind the answer

The Solomon Islands national flag was adopted in 1977.

It was formally adopted on 18 November 1977, eight months before the Solomon Islands became independent from the United Kingdom on 7 July 1978. The flag replaced the British Blue Ensign that had been used during the protectorate period.

Its design has a thin yellow diagonal stripe separating a blue upper triangle from a green lower triangle. Five white stars appear in the blue section. They originally represented the country’s provinces, although the number of provinces later changed and the stars remained five.

The flag’s adoption was part of the preparation for independence, not the independence ceremony itself. That distinction explains why 1977 is correct rather than 1978. The stars also should not be mistaken for the Southern Cross used on several other Pacific flags.
