The Hound of the Baskervilles was first published as a book in 1902.
Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous Holmes novel was published in book form by George Newnes on 25 March 1902. Before that, it had been serialised in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, allowing readers to follow the mystery in instalments and speculate about the terrifying hound.
The story is set largely on Dartmoor in Devon and follows Holmes and Watson as they investigate the Baskerville family legend. Its appearance was especially important because it was the first new Holmes story after “The Final Problem,” in which Holmes seemed to die at Reichenbach Falls. The novel’s success helped persuade Doyle to revive the detective more fully.
The year 1901 can therefore cause confusion: it marks the start of the magazine serialisation, not the first book publication. The same year, 1902, also saw the novel published in the United States.
