Mercado Libre was founded in 1999.
The company was established in Argentina by Marcos Galperin and initially developed as an online marketplace for Latin American buyers and sellers. Its name means “free market” in Spanish, reflecting its marketplace model.
Mercado Libre later expanded beyond listings and transactions. Its ecosystem includes payment services through Mercado Pago, shipping and logistics tools, advertising, credit and other financial products. This broader structure makes it more than a conventional online auction or retail website.
The company is often compared with eBay because both began as online marketplaces, but Mercado Libre developed around the particular payment, logistics and financial needs of Latin American markets. It operates across numerous countries in the region.
