In what year was the Google company founded?

The story behind the answer

In what year was the Google company founded? Google was founded in 1998.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin began developing Google while they were graduate students at Stanford University. Their early search engine was originally called BackRub and ranked pages partly by analyzing links between them. The project was renamed Google, a play on “googol,” the mathematical term for 1 followed by 100 zeros.

Google was incorporated on September 4, 1998, in Menlo Park, California. Its first major office was a rented garage in nearby Menlo Park, which became part of the company’s famous origin story. The company’s initial focus was web search, but it later expanded into advertising, email, maps, cloud computing, mobile software, hardware, and artificial intelligence.

A common mix-up is 2004: that was the year Google held its initial public offering, not the year it was founded. Another important date is 2015, when Google became a subsidiary of the newly created holding company Alphabet.
