The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened in Santa Fe in 1997. It was established to preserve, study, and present O'Keeffe's art and to interpret her connections with New Mexico.
O'Keeffe died in 1986, and the museum opened more than a decade later. Its collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other materials connected with her career. The institution also manages related historical resources, including the artist's former homes and studios at Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch through associated preservation work.
The museum is in Santa Fe, not in O'Keeffe's birthplace of Sun Prairie or in New York, where she had major early career connections. Santa Fe became an appropriate location because O'Keeffe lived and worked in New Mexico for much of her later life and because the region was central to her artistic legacy.
