The first Sonic the Hedgehog game was released in 1991. Sega launched the original platform game for the Mega Drive, known as the Genesis in North America, making Sonic its new mascot and a major rival to Nintendo’s Mario.
The game was developed by Sonic Team, led by programmer Yuji Naka, artist Naoto Ohshima, and designer Hirokazu Yasuhara. Its fast movement, loop-filled levels, collectible Rings, and energetic music gave it a distinctive identity in the early 1990s. Sonic’s goal is to stop Dr. Robotnik, later standardized as Dr. Eggman, from turning animals into robots and using the Chaos Emeralds for his plans.
The 1991 date refers to the original game, not later Sonic releases. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 followed in 1992, while Sonic CD and Sonic 3 arrived in 1993. Regional release timing varied, but the game’s debut year is consistently recorded as 1991. Sonic had appeared briefly in the arcade game Rad Mobile before this, but that was a cameo rather than his first main game.
