The film The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio was released in 2013.
Directed and co-written by Baz Luhrmann, the film adapts F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby, with Tobey Maguire as narrator Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. The story follows Gatsby’s lavish Jazz Age parties and his attempt to rekindle his romance with Daisy.
The film premiered in New York City on May 1, 2013, followed by its United States release on May 10. It was originally scheduled for December 25, 2012, but Warner Bros. moved it to the following summer. That change can cause confusion with the film’s production period: principal photography took place in Australia from September to December 2011.
Luhrmann’s adaptation was released in both 2D and 3D. It earned more than $353 million worldwide and won Academy Awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. It is distinct from the 1974 film starring Robert Redford and the 2000 television adaptation.
