In what year was Moët & Chandon, the Champagne house, founded?

The story behind the answer

Moët & Chandon, the Champagne house, was founded in 1743.

Claude Moët established the house in Épernay, a town at the heart of Champagne’s wine trade. The company initially built its reputation by supplying Champagne to aristocratic and royal customers, helping turn the region’s sparkling wine into an international luxury product.

The name later became Moët & Chandon after Pierre-Gabriel Chandon joined the business through marriage in the eighteenth century. The house is now one of the best-known Champagne producers and is part of the LVMH luxury-goods group.

Moët & Chandon is sometimes confused with Ruinart or Veuve Clicquot when lists of historic Champagne houses are discussed. Ruinart was founded in 1729, while Veuve Clicquot’s house dates to 1772; Moët & Chandon’s founding date is 1743.
