In what year was J.R.R. Tolkien born?
Answer
1892
Answer
1892
J.R.R. Tolkien was born in 1892.
Tolkien was born John Ronald Reuel Tolkien on 3 January 1892 in Bloemfontein, in what was then the Orange Free State. His family moved to England after his father died in 1896, and the English countryside strongly influenced his imagination.
His birthplace is sometimes overlooked because Tolkien is closely associated with Oxford and the English Midlands. However, his early South African childhood came before the landscapes, languages, and medieval literature that shaped his later writing.
Tolkien became one of the best-known fantasy authors of the twentieth century. His major Middle-earth works included The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, although the last was published after his death.
