In what year was J. M. Barrie born?

The story behind the answer

J. M. Barrie was born in 1860.

James Matthew Barrie was born on 9 May 1860 in Kirriemuir, Scotland. He became a novelist, playwright, and journalist, and his best-known creation was Peter Pan. Barrie’s Scottish upbringing later influenced parts of his writing, although Peter Pan’s main setting is the fantastical island of Neverland and the London home of the Darling family.

Barrie studied at the University of Edinburgh and began his professional career as a journalist. He later wrote novels and plays, gaining major theatrical success with Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, first staged in 1904.

The year 1860 is sometimes confused with the publication dates of Barrie’s Peter Pan works. Peter first appeared in The Little White Bird in 1902, the stage play premiered in 1904, and Peter and Wendy was published in 1911. These are milestones in the character’s history, not Barrie’s birth year.
