Material shortages during the 1930s and 1940s encouraged Gucci to experiment with canvas, raffia, wicker, wood, linen, and jute rather than relying solely on leather.

The company expanded under Guccio’s sons, especially Aldo Gucci, who helped open a Rome store in 1938.
