Georgia O'Keeffe's Abiquiu home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico, was the artist's principal residence and workplace for many years. O'Keeffe acquired the neglected adobe house in 1945 and spent years having it restored before moving there in 1949.
The property contains architectural features that became part of her visual world, including a courtyard wall and a distinctive door that she repeatedly painted. The house also preserves the practical setting in which she worked, photographed, and organized her life.
The landmark designation recognizes the site's national importance in American art and cultural history. It is distinct from O'Keeffe's Ghost Ranch residence, another important New Mexico location. The Abiquiu property is now associated with the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and is visited through scheduled tours.
