Georgia O'Keeffe was born in 1887. She was born on November 15, 1887, in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, to Francis Calyxtus O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe.

O'Keeffe grew up on a farm with six siblings. Her early surroundings, including the open Wisconsin landscape, helped form her strong interest in observing natural shapes and patterns. She received art instruction while still young and decided early that she wanted to become an artist.

O'Keeffe later studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. Although her style changed significantly over her long career, she remained known for enlarging flowers, painting landscapes, and reducing natural forms to bold abstractions.

The year 1887 is sometimes confused with the date of her first major New York exhibition, which occurred decades later. O'Keeffe lived to be 98 and became one of the best-known American artists of the twentieth century.
