Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, in 1887.
She was born on November 15, 1887, to Francis Calyxtus O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe. She grew up on a dairy farm with several siblings, and her early rural surroundings later remained an important part of her visual memory.
O'Keeffe showed artistic ability as a child and received art instruction while growing up. She later studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York before developing a more personal, simplified style.
A common mix-up is confusing her birthplace with New Mexico, where she lived for much of her later life. New Mexico became central to her mature work, but Wisconsin was her birthplace.
