C.S. Lewis’s The Last Battle was first published in 1956.
The novel is the seventh and final published book in The Chronicles of Narnia, although Lewis’s intended internal chronology places it after The Silver Chair. It concludes Narnia’s history with the world’s final destruction and the characters’ entry into a deeper reality.
The Last Battle won the Carnegie Medal in 1957, an award presented for outstanding children’s literature in the United Kingdom. Its publication followed The Magician’s Nephew, which appeared in 1955, and completed the sequence of Narnia books released during Lewis’s lifetime.
Readers sometimes confuse publication order with Narnian chronological order. The Last Battle is the final volume by publication date and the final event in the story’s internal timeline, but The Magician’s Nephew is commonly read first in chronological-order editions because it describes Narnia’s creation.
