In what year was Assassin's Creed Odyssey originally released worldwide?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Odyssey was originally released worldwide in 2018.

Ubisoft launched the role-playing game on October 5, 2018, for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. A version for Nintendo Switch was offered in Japan through cloud streaming, while later releases expanded availability to other platforms. Odyssey followed Assassin's Creed Origins, which had launched in 2017.

The game is set in the fifth century BCE during the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. Players can control either Alexios or Kassandra as the playable descendant of Leonidas I. The chosen character travels through a large version of the Greek world and encounters historical figures, myth-inspired creatures, and competing factions.

The year is sometimes confused with 2017 because Origins arrived one year earlier and established the modern role-playing direction. Valhalla followed Odyssey in 2020. Odyssey also received post-launch story content, including The Fate of Atlantis.
