Georgia O'Keeffe was born in 1887. She was born on November 15, 1887, in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, the second of seven children in a farming family.
O'Keeffe studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Art Students League of New York. Her early training included traditional drawing and painting, but she became known for pushing American art toward abstraction.
Her career lasted for more than seven decades. O'Keeffe became especially associated with enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, animal bones, and the landscapes of New Mexico. She died in Santa Fe in 1986 at age 98.
