Van Gogh arrived in Arles on 20 February 1888, leaving Paris because he was exhausted by city life and hoped southern France would offer brighter light, vivid colors, and a new artistic direction. The Provençal landscape inspired a major change in his palette, with intense yellows, blues, and mauves becoming central to his work.

He initially stayed at the Restaurant Carrel and later moved to the Café de la Gare. On 1 May, he leased four rooms at 2 Place Lamartine, the building he called the Yellow House. He spent his first night there on 17 September, after it had been furnished sufficiently for him to live and work.

The year is sometimes confused with 1889 because Van Gogh remained in the region into the following year and experienced his major medical crises in late 1888 and early 1889. Paul Gauguin joined him at the Yellow House in October 1888, during one of Van Gogh’s most productive periods.
