Tupac Shakur died in 1996 after being shot in Las Vegas.
The rapper was shot in a drive-by attack on September 7, 1996, while riding in a BMW on Las Vegas Boulevard. He had been traveling with Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Shakur died from his injuries six days later, on September 13, 1996, at the age of 25.
His death occurred during a highly publicized period of tension between East Coast and West Coast hip hop figures, although the exact circumstances and broader motives have been debated for decades. Shakur’s death is sometimes incorrectly dated to 1997 because several major posthumous releases followed in that year. His album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory was released after his death, in November 1996, under the name Makaveli.
