The Ramones played their first concert in the United Kingdom in 1976.
The New York punk band made its first British appearance at the Roundhouse in London on 4 July 1976. The concert was part of a landmark visit that also included a performance at the 100 Club. The shows helped connect the emerging New York and London punk scenes.
Members of the British audience included future musicians from bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Clash. The Ramones’ short songs, rapid tempos and stripped-down presentation had already made them influential in New York, but their British performances demonstrated how powerfully that approach could translate across the Atlantic.
The date is sometimes confused with the group’s first European appearance generally or with the date of their debut album. The Ramones released their first studio album in April 1976, before the British concerts. Their 1976 London visit was therefore an early international performance by an already established New York band.
