The Peggy Guggenheim Collection opened to the public in Venice in 1980.
Peggy Guggenheim assembled the collection during the twentieth century and displayed much of it at her Venetian home, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. The collection includes important works by modern artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Jackson Pollock, and Alexander Calder.
Guggenheim had lived in the palazzo and presented parts of her collection there during her lifetime. After her death in 1979, the collection was opened to the public the following year and later became part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s museum network.
The Venetian museum is distinct from the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Its intimate setting and concentration on European and American modernism reflect Peggy Guggenheim’s personal collecting history.
